A one-cent local sales tax took effect in Des Moines in July. Now the issues is going back before voters in neighboring communities.

An additional one-cent sales tax will start showing up Monday on shoppers' receipts in Des Moines and several surrounding communities. Half of the revenue from the local option sales tax passed by voters in March is earmarked to lower property tax rates.

Construction starts this month on a new behavioral health hospital going up in a Des Moines suburb. Clive Behavioral Health will be part of the MercyOne system. It will have 100 beds to provide much needed inpatient care as well as outpatient treatment and counseling, crisis response and telehealth services.

With just 30 units for every 100 families in need of shelter, Des Moines has less affordable housing available than Brooklyn, Boston, or Omaha. Even when housing can be secured, often following a wait that can last several months, or even years, the quality and safety of affordable housing may be questionable in Polk County.

Recovery and rebuilding efforts are already underway at central Iowa manufacturer Vermeer, one day after the corporation's headquarters in Pella took a direct hit from a tornado. Metal siding, downed powerlines and crumpled cars were scattered across the grounds at the agriculture and construction equipment company, but with limited injuries and no fatalities, officials have said they'll come back "stronger than ever."
