Iowa has seen below-normal snowfall since December, creating what weather experts call a "snow drought." The dry conditions have disrupted winter recreation and raised concerns about the ecosystem at a wildlife preserve in northwest Iowa.

Cyclists from across the county — and the world — are converging on Iowa this weekend for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, commonly known as RAGBRAI.

Iowa is one of the most biologically altered states in the nation — with nearly all of its natural habitat razed. Some people are looking at how they can resurrect the natural land and the wildlife it has lost.
