2nd District Voter Map

Alan Light

Iowa City, Davenport, Burlington and Ottumwa are the major population centers in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District.

Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack has represented the 2nd, located in the southeast portion of the state, since 2007.  Republican challenger Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks trails in the polls by double digits.

This is the third attempt by Miller-Meeks to unseat Loebsack.  She also ran in 2008 and 2010.

"The Second District is the most Democratic district in the state, largely due to the size of Johnson County," writes Democratic strategist Jeff Link in an email. "With 21,000 more Democrats than Republicans, it is the Democratic anchor."

Republican strategist David Kochel agrees the 2nd is Iowa's most Democratic district.  However, he writes many of the registered Democrats are moderates who can be persuaded to vote for Republican candidates.

"Scott County, with more Democrats than Republicans, is a county where the GOP has demonstrated surprising electoral strength in some election cycles, on the growth of its suburban population," writes Kochel. "Strong off-year turnout among Republicans will make this district more competitive than in a presidential year."
