The Lee County Board of Supervisors will consider an ordinance Tuesday that would raise the county’s minimum wage to $8.20.
Meanwhile, a bill working its way through the Iowa Legislature would prohibit minimum wage increases by local governments. The Iowa House of Representatives passed the bill on to the Senate last week.
Don Hunold is the vice chair of the Lee County Board of Supervisors. He said there is no guarantee that state lawmakers will vote to keep the minimum wage at the federal and state level of $7.25.
“I know the Republicans have control [of the Legislature], and they probably will get something done," Hunold said. "But until that happens, we’re going to march ahead.”
Hunold said the Board of Supervisors appointed a committee last fall to develop a minimum wage ordinance. That ordinance was brought to the board last week.
Tuesday’s vote in Lee County will be the first of three on the ordinance.
Johnson, Polk, Linn and Wapello counties have already raised their local minimum wage.
