IPR hosts choose their top Blues, Folk and Classical music releases of 2021

IPR hosts Bob Dorr, Karen Impola and Barney Sherman share their favorite new(ish) releases.

Karen Impola is the host of Iowa Public Radio's The Folk Tree on Sundays at 1 p.m. on IPR News-Studio One.

1. Awful Purdies — "Why Would I Be Small" from the album "The Great Unraveling"
2. Raldo Schneider — "Dreams" from the album "Memory Lane"
3. Pete Kies — "Ten Pound Catfish" from the album "Ten Pound Catfish and other exaggerations"
4. Rhiannon Giddens — "Waterbound" from the album "They’re Calling Me Home"
5. Corey Harris — "Insurrection Blues (Chickens Come Home to Roost)" from the album "The Insurrection Blues"
6. Martin Simpson — "Admiral Benbow" from the album "Home Recordings"
7. Charlie Parr — "Last of the Better Days Ahead" from the album "Last of the Better Days Ahead"
8. Tim O’Brien — "I Breathe In" from the album "He Walked On"

Barney Sherman is the host of Classical Music with Barney Sherman on IPR Classical stations on weekdays at 1 p.m. and Sundays at noon. 

1. "For a Beautiful Land" by Iowa composer Linda Robbins Coleman, played by the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Reuben Blundell, from the album "American Discoveries"
2. "Mack the Knife" section from "Little Threepenny Music" by Kurt Weill. It's performed by the University of Iowa Chamber Ensemble conducted by Richard Mark Heidel, from the album "The Voxman Project"
3. "Reflection (Brightest Days)" performed by Karen Black on a Dobson Pipe Organ at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. This is from her new album "Ein Feste Burg: Dobson Pipe Organ 25th Anniversary"
4. "All in Due Time" by William Campbell from the album "All in Due Time"

Bob Dorr is the host of Beatles Medley, Backtracks, and Blue Avenue on IPR's Studio One. Though Bob's picks aren't necessarily the best of the year, here are his favorites for 2021:

1. "She's Tough" sung by Victor Wainwright from Tony Holiday's album "Porch Sessions Volume 2"
2. "Don't Mess With the Messer" by Diunna Greenleaf from Bob Corritore & Friends' album "Spider In My Stew"

5. "Dirty Rotten Guy " by Joyann Parker from the album "Out Of The Dark"
6. "Bust 'em Down " by Catfish Keith from the album "Land of The Sky"
7. "Night and Day" by Malcolm Wells & The Two Timers from the album "Hollerin' Out Loud"
8. " Santa Claus Is Back In Town" sung by Victor Wainwright from the Wildroots Band off the album "The Wildroots Sessions Volume 1"
