Rep. Loebsack celebrates his reelection win in Iowa City in 2016.

Iowa’s 2nd District Congressman Dave Loebsack says this will be his last term in office.  Loebsack, a Democrat, published a statement on his website Friday saying he will not run for reelection in 2020 to represent the district in the southeast quarter of the state.

The statement says he’d planned to serve no more than 12 years when he won his first election in 2006.  But when Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, Loebsack said he felt the need to run for reelection “in the hopes that I could provide a check on his worst impulses.”  He defeated Republican Christopher Peters last November, with 53 percent of the vote.
