Remembering two fallen law enforcement officers from central Iowa

On November 2, 2016, two central Iowa police officers were murdered. Des Moines Police Sergeant Tony Beminio and Urbandale police officer Justin Martin were killed in separate shootings while they sat in their patrol cars.

The shootings took place about two miles apart and within minutes of each other. Scott Green was charged with first degree murder in both killings. He pleaded guilty in 2017 and is serving a life sentence in prison.

Courtney Crowder is the Des Moines Register Iowa columnist and her in-depth article on this story is titled “Inside the ambush of two police officers, the manhunt for their murderer and the trauma that lingers.” Crowder joins Ben Kieffer to recount the shootings five years ago.

Later in the podcast, Iowa State University labor economist Peter Orazem talks about Iowa’s economy and whether the UAW strike against John Deere may signal more labor unrest to come in the country.
