We'll also hear Plagge perform "Pasquinade" by Louis Moreau Gottschalk. (Bavarian Radio/European Broadcasting Union)
Pianist Andras Schiff (AHN-drahsh SHIFF) has devoted much of his career to playing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He's recorded much of Bach's keyboard works. And last May at the Schwetzingen (SHVET-sing-gen) Festival in Germany, he gave an all-Bach piano recital. From that concert, we're going to hear a performance of the Partita No. 5 in G major by Johann Sebastian Bach. (Southwest German Radio/EBU)
Offenbach over the border: The French National Orchestra and conductor Lawrence Foster take a trip to the Kissinger (KISS-ing-er) Summer festival in Germany. From a July 14th concert we'll hear a few numbers from the ballet "Gaite Parisienne" (geh-tay pah-reez-YEN). The music is by Jacques Offenbach (OHF-en-bahkh), arranged by Manuel Rosenthal. (Bavarian Radio/EBU)

Vail Valley Music Festival, a sextet of musicians performs the Divertimento in F major for 2 Oboes, 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons, K. 213 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Recorded in concert earlier this month at the Vilar Center of the Arts in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Franz Joseph Haydn was something of a celebrity when he visited London in the 1790's. For his return visit he composed what have become some of his best-known symphonies, and six new string quartets. We'll hear the first of these, the String Quartet Op. 74, No. 1, from a performance the Shanghai String Quartet gave at the Rockport Music Festival in Massachusetts last month. From this year's Strings in the Mountains Festival, the Strings Chamber Orchestra and soloists perform the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 Johann Sebastian Bach. recorded in concert one month ago in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. HOUR 2 Guitarist Angel Romero performs two Spanish guitar miniatures--Garrotin (gar-roh-TEEN) and Soleares (soh-lay-AH-rays)--by Joaquin Turina (hwah-KEEN too-REE-nah). With the discovery of gold in the New World In the 16th Century, Spain suddenly found itself one of the wealthiest countries in the Old World. Recorded in concert on August 4th at the Musicorda Festival in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Meet Dr. Beat: Metronomes have just taken a giant leap forward, thanks to a brand new one on the market. It's called Dr. Beat, and we asked violist and PT commentator Toby Appel to put it to the test. He'll tell us about some of its more interesting features (like a woman's voice), what it can--and can't--do, and why he thinks musicians may like it. Dr. Beat says "One. Two. Three. Four." So does the chorus in one of the most celebrated 20th century operas, "Einstein on the Beach" by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson. We'll hear the final short scene of the opera, called Knee Play 5. The Philip Glass Ensemble, violinist Paul Zukovsky, a women's chorus and actors Lucinda Childs and Sheryl Sutton are joined by Samuel M. Johnson, who declaims a love story.
Johann Christian Bach was one of the most cosmopolitan of J.S.Bach children.
