Iowa U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst is interviewed Tuesday in the state Capitol’s Senate chamber about her first re-election campaign.

Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst is running her first re-election campaign. Many have political pundits and pollsters have labeled Ernst's race against Democrat Theresa Greenfield a toss-up. Ernst, who retired from the military in 2015, was elected to the state senate in 2011 and was a county auditor in Montgomery County prior to that. She defeated Democrat Bruce Braley in 2014 in seeking the seat of longtime Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, who retired that year.

Iowa Public Radio News is sitting down both of the major party candidates to discuss response to the derecho and the pandemic.
