Los Lobos: Elegantly Raucous

Los Lobos.
Los Lobos.
Listen

Los Lobos' music is hard to classify: Its members play raucous rock 'n' roll, but they often incorporate elegant melodic ballads into the mix. Sometimes they play blues or rockabilly or folk, but each song incorporates at least a touch of their Mexican-American heritage.

The band was formed in 1974, and has remained together with the same core members ever since. All were friends from the same East Los Angeles high school, when they started playing weddings and parties in their neighborhood, in the process developing the makings of their own unique style. Los Lobos has since released more than a dozen albums — and topped the charts in 1987 with its cover of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba." The group's latest, The Town and the City, is a subtly emotional first-person account of a Mexican immigrant making his way in the U.S. Listen to yesterday's 'Song of the Day.'
