A Classical Mother's Day

For Mother's Day, NPR's Fred Child speaks with pianist Wu Han and her 10-year-old daughter Lillian about how they share music together. Lillian, an accomplished violinist and pianist, performs part of a four hands duet by 19th century German composer Carl Loewe with her mom.

Lillian has grown up in a professional music household -- her dad is David Finkel, cellist with the Emerson String Quartet. She began her musical education when most children are learning their ABC's.

When she was 4, a very persistent Lillian started to ask her mother if she could take up the violin. Wu Han was a bit stubborn, believing that her daughter could not conceptualize the amount of hard work involved in learning the instrument. But Lillian won her over that time, and again when the piano caught her eye.

Now mother and daughter share music, nurturing a special bond whenever they play together.
