Principle Research Fellow, Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics University of Oxford Oxford, United Kingdom On February 14, 2000 the spacecraft NEAR-Shoemaker encountered the Near Earth Asteroid Eros. The first reports from that encounter are published this week in the journal Science. In this hour, we'll hear what researchers are learning about the asteroid. Plus, for more than 100 years, scientists have been searching for a vaccine to combat malaria. So far all attempts have met with failure. But this week in Gambia, Africa, scientists from Oxford University began testing a new type of vaccine that has rekindled the hope of controling malaria. We'll talk with one of the researchers about the vaccine.
