Exploring Secrets And Silence In Brit Bennett’s “The Mothers”

Iowa Public Radio
The Talk of Iowa book club is back for a September meeting. This month's selection is "The Mothers" by Brit Bennett.

“The Mothers” by Brit Bennett tells the story of Nadia Turner, a young woman with big dreams, a bright future and a secret that silently shapes her relationships with friends, family and her conservative church community in Oceanside, California.

It’s the September meeting of the Talk of Iowa book club. Host Charity Nebbe is joined by Shanna Benjamin, an independent scholar with a specialization in Black women writers; Roslin Thompson, library director at Knoxville Public Library and poet Emily Spencer to discuss this New York Times Best Seller and All Iowa Reads 2020 selection.

Interested in joining the next Talk of Iowa book club? Our October selection is “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros. Pick up the book now and join the on-air discussion on October 14th.

Guests:

  • Shanna Benjamin, independent scholar in literary studies with a specialization in Black women writers and author of the forthcoming book “Half in Shadow: The Life and Legacy of Nellie Y. McKay”
  • Roslin Thompson, library director at Knoxville Public Library
