On today's episode of Talk of Iowa, Charity Nebbe speaks with Dr. Richard Deming, an oncologist and medical director of Mercy One Cancer Center in Des Moines. Deming has made it his mission to go way beyond what is taught in medical school. His goal is to help his patients live each day to the fullest.

Deming's new book "Above and Beyond Cancer" details the intersection between his personal philosophy of life and helping patients find joy —"not in spite of their cancer, but because of their cancer," Deming says.

Dr. Richard Deming is an oncologist and medical director of Mercy One Cancer Center in Des Moines. His new book is titled "Above and Beyond Cancer."

Deming hopes his book will be a way for all people, not just his cancer patients, to find hope and optimism. “Ultimately, cancer is about a big bump in the road of life," he says. "How we deal with the bump, and how we use a bump to be a springboard and not a barrier, really is the essence of how you find joy and meaning in one’s life.”
