Cooking At Home With Talk Of Iowa Summer Camp

Cooking and sharing meals brings people together. Learning to cook and prepare food might sound tedious and time consuming. But, with a few basic skills and recipes, you can become self-sufficent in your own kitchen. During this episode of Talk of Iowa, learn how to make new recipes and get your children interested in cooking at home with Kumar Wickramasingha and Katy Meyer.

Summer may be a little different this year, but it's still a wonderful time for learning and adventure. Welcome to Talk of Iowa Summer Camp! Every Tuesday, join us for Talk of Iowa episodes that will be fun and educational for learners of all ages.

Learn how to make chef Katy's oat cookies

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup peanut butter or nut butter
  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • ¾ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1/3 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/3 tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ginger
  • ½ cup combo of chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds, walnuts

Instructions: Pre-heat oven to 350 degree. Combine dry ingriedents. Combine wet ingriedents. Mix both wet and dry ingredients together. Use spoon or small cup to scoop mixture on baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Place in oven for 12-14 minutes. Let the cookies cool down. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 12 large strawberries (3 strawberries per person)
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 cups water
  • Oil to fry
  • Whipped cream
  • Raspberry sauce

Instructions:

Pull the stem off the strawberries.  (Do not cut.) Dip them in water and then transfer to flour and coat them well. Transfer flour coated strawberries into the beaten egg and coat them well. Transfer flour and egg coated strawberries into graham cracker crumbs and coat them well. Preheat your oil, in either a heavy pan on the stove or a deep fryer, to 350 degrees. Deep fry for 1 minute or until strawberries are golden brown.  No more than two minutes. Shake off oil and coat them in granulated sugar. Top with whipped cream and raspberry sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup yogurt
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • Handful baby spinach
  • ½ tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

Instructions: Add ingredients to blender. Blend to your preferred level of thickness
