The Nation's Largest Skatepark Will Be In Des Moines

Nate Sherwood grew up in a time when skateboarding was viewed as rebellious and countercultural. Now skateboarding is viewed in an entirely different light with clinics for young skaters, family skateboard outings, and cities all across Iowa constructing skateparks. This fall the City of Des Moines will be opening the Lauridsen Skatepark, which will be the largest skatepark in the United States with 88,000 square-feet of skatable surface.

On this edition of Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe talks with Nate Sherwood, former professional skater and owner of Edu-Skate Board Shop in Cedar Rapids, about skating culture and how it has evolved over the decades. She also talks with three members of the Des Moines skatepark committee who were instrumental in making the Lauridsen Skatepark a reality, including Kevin Jones, Christine Hensley and Brad Anderson.

Guests:

Nate Sherwood, Owner Edu-Skate Board Shop in Cedar Rapids

Kevin Jones, Owner Subsect SkateShop in Des Moines

Christine Hensley, Former Des Moines City Council Member and Co-Chair of the Des Moines Skatepark Committee

Brad Anderson, Co-Chair of the Des Moines Skatepark Committee
