Fuller has recently been getting national attention for his newest macabre creations, "people pot pies," which are inspired by his love of Halloween and horror and his fascination with artistic hyperrealism.

"It's such a compliment to me when people say that it looks too disgusting to eat because that means that I made sugar look hideous," he laughs. "But when I have that moment when I get to cut into the cake and people realize there's no sacrifice in the flavor for the look of the cake, that's really satisfying for me."

From his home in Des Moines, he creates custom cakes and confections that look much more like sculpture art than they do like food.

"I started making these sorts of cakes in 2016," he says. "My husband and I were going on a trip around Europe, and I had watched all these food network shows and thought, 'I could do that.' I had no idea how complicated the structured cake is... but I made him a cake in the form of a suitcase with flags for all the countries we were going to, and people really loved it. It just took off."

Fuller is a self taught baker who jokes about attending what he calls "YouTube University."  You can find him on instagram @guymeetscakeor via his Facebook page.

His advice for the novice baker who wants to learn to make their food into art?

"Hire me!" he laughs. "No but really, it's very challening, and you're going to make mistakes. That's okay."
