Bird Feeding 101

Winter can be a wonderful time to see wildlife, and for some of the best viewing, you don’t even have to get cold. Wildlife Biologist Jim Pease talks about the natural intimacy of attracting winter birds to your bird feeder.

"You get to see not only their behaviors, but their interactions, how they change over time, and you suddenly realize there's a seasonality to this," Pease says. "The gold finches we're seeing now are very different from the gold finches we saw a month ago. They still had a lot of bright yellow on them, and now they're pretty drab. They've changed their plumage, so it's fascinating to watch those changes throughout the season."

During this hour of Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe speaks with Wildlife Biologist Jim Pease about common species, what to feed them, and how best to see them. They also take calls from listeners.
