Holy Rover: Journeys in Search of Mystery, Miracles, and God

Machu Picchu in Peru, one of the sites featured in the book

NOTE: This show originally aired 9-14-17

For her newest book, author and traveler Lori Erickson went in search of places where she felt something special. In her new memoir, she visits holy sites all over the world and says that Holy Rover: Journeys in Search of Mystery, Miracles, and God is similar to what "St. Augustine might have written if he was born a Lutheran in Iowa."

During this hour of Talk of Iowa, she talks with Charity Nebbe about her travels.

"Well, as holy sites, I define them really broadly. I feel that taking a pilgrimage is going to a place that changes your heart. Sometime you know it’s a pilgrimage, and sometimes you don’t know it was until you get back.

"You don’t have to travel very far. Every corner of Iowa, every corner of the world has a place where you can go on a pilgrimage – the point is to go and to cut yourself off temporarily from your ordinary routines and to be in silence and prayer if that is a word that you use. But I think prayer is often seen as something that is regimented…but it really is an invitation to mystery and openness and silence."
