Late Census Data Complicates Iowa Redistricting

John Pemble / Iowa Public Radio

As it’s done with almost every aspect of our lives, the pandemic has disrupted the once-a-decade practice of redistricting – the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn.

On this edition of River to River, host Ben Kieffer and Kathie Obradovich, editor in chief of the Iowa Capital Dispatch, talk to State Representative Bobby Kaufman (R), and Senate Minority leader Zach Wahls (D) about the late census data and what it means for Iowa’s non-partisan redistricting process.

Later, a discussion about a bill that's no longer alive this session. The bill (SF 245) would’ve allowed Iowa college athletes to be the first in the nation to profit from the use of their names, likenesses and images. State Senators Nate Boulton (D) and Brad Zaun (R) talk about the future of this debate.

Guests:

  • Kathie Obradovich, editor in chief, Iowa Capital Dispatch
  • Zach Wahls, senate minority leader and Democrat from Iowa City
  • Bobby Kaufmann, state representative and Republican from Wilton
  • Nate Boulton, state senator and Democrat from Des Moines
  • Brad Zaun, state senator and Republican from Urbandale
