Young fans showing their love for Herky the Hawkeye.

A decision this week had Hawkeye and Big Ten football fans shouting for joy. The Big Ten is going to give fall football a shot after all. The decision comes less than five weeks after pushing fall sports to spring for the sake of player safety during the pandemic.

On this River to River podcast, Ben Kieffer is joined by The Des Moines Register's Mark Emmert to understand what this Big Ten football season will look like. Emmert also explains how the Big Ten arrived at this decision, the COVID-19 protocols that are in place and how university presidents factored into this decision.

The Big Ten Conference said it plans to open its football season the weekend of October 23-24.
