UFOs are the center of many common conspiracy theories.

Rational, scientific explanations are more available than ever. And yet, belief in the irrational is on the rise.

On this episode of River to River, host Ben Kieffer speaks with author Colin Dickey about his new book, "The Unidentified: Mythical Monsters, Alien Encounters, and Our Obsession with the Unexplained."

Dickey's book explores why people believe the conspiracy theories they do — how they take root, why many of them are so similar, and how secrecy can feed beliefs that "the government is hiding something from us." In his book, Dickey examines conspiracy theories from Atlantis to 9/11.
