Keeping Carbon in the Soil: Small Steps to Curb Climate Change

In his new book, author Courtney White points to the seemingly intractable challenges faced on earth: the increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, rising food demands from a population that’s projected to rise from the current 7 billion to 9 billion people by 2050, and the dwindling supply of fresh water.

White says that most of these challenges mean big solutions with big costs, both financial and social. This raised the question in his mind a few years ago: Why not consider low cost, low technology, nature-based solutions instead? This question became the focus of White’s new book, Two Percent Solutions for the Planet.

On this edition of River to River, host Ben Kieffer talks with White and with an Iowa farmer implementing environmental solutions on his farm in Johnson County. Jeff Biggers, the founder of the Climate Narrative Project at the University of Iowa, joins the conversation as well.
