On the May edition of Iowa Public Radio’s Iowa Arts Showcase, we will hear from Laura Johnson on the University of Iowa Opera Theatre’s production of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. Johnson is a visiting professor to the university and the guest director to the ensemble. The performance took place at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City on May 2, 3, 4, and 5.

We’ll learn about National Preservation Month from David Janssen, the executive director of Brucemore Mansion in Cedar Rapids. Janssen will also share and discuss the indoor and outdoor events schedule for this popular historical landmark.

We’ll dive into the concert line up for the May 10th Gallagher-Bluedorn Crème de la Crème concert with three different guests. One of these guests is Hugh Pettersen, Cedar Valley impresario and founder of both the College Hill Arts Festival and this concert series, now in its thirteenth year. Tom Barry, recently retired oboe and saxophone professor at UNI, will talk about his performance in the concert with the band Checker and the Bluetones. Dmitri Vorobiev, Assistant Professor of Piano at UNI, will chat about his group the Five Grands, the piano ensemble that traditionally concludes each Crème de la Crème concert.

And the Des Moines Metro Opera’s executive director, Michael Egel, talks about this year’s upcoming season including performances of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Britten’s Peter Grimes, and Elektra by Richard Strauss, running from June 21st through July 14th at the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola.
