Ryan Calls For 'New And Better' Over 'Left Vs Right'

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan says he wants half the electric cars manufactured during the next 10 years to be built in the U.S.

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio says the country needs to move beyond political discussions that focus on left vs. right, and work toward making the United States new and better.

Ryan told a crowd at the Des Moines Register’s Political Soap Box at the State Fair that, in his administration, that transformation would include the appointment of a chief manufacturing officer.  That person would help develop strategies on how the U.S. can dominate industries, like building the cars of the future.

“Somewhere in the world, we are going to make 10 million electric vehicles in the next 10 years,” he said. “I want half of those built by American workers in the United States of America.”

Ryan says new industries ranging from clean cars to 3D printing to renewable energy present an opportunity not only to the U.S. economy as a whole, but to also revitalize areas of the country that have lost manufacturing jobs in previous decades.

Ryan says his plan also includes providing a Medicaid public option that could help 60 million Americans, combating preventable, chronic disease, and encouraging regenerative agriculture.  He also proposes transforming K-12 education to stress not only programs to help teachers, but also putting more mental health counselors in schools.
