Red Cross Helping Iowans Affected By Severe Weather

The American Red Cross has dispatched volunteers and resources to areas that were damaged by severe storms, including the Linn County town of Prairieburg which was struck by a tornado.

Leslie Schaffer is the CEO of the American Red Cross of Central Iowa chapter.  She says right now her organization is making sure that the people affected by the storm have their immediate needs met.

"We have volunteer caseworkers who will ask folks, you know, what their resources are, what they may need immediately. And then we provide them with financial support to help fill that gap," she says. "In many cases in a tornado there’s insurance that would cover their damage. But there might not be, or there might be a gap and so the Red Cross will help out."

Schaffer says so far four or five cases are open, though she expects that number to rise.
