On Tuesday, four officials of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa – that’s the entire RAGBRAI staff - announced their resignations from RAGBRAI, and announced they’re starting a new ride called Iowa’s Ride. This bike tour will take place the same week RAGBRAI is scheduled in the summer of 2020.
The move stems from a rift over the Des Moines Register’s handling of the Carson King story. It was the Register's article about Carson King sending racially insensitive tweets as a teenager, and the Register was widely criticized for its handling of that situation. RAGBRAI officials who resigned said after getting criticism on the Carson King affair they wanted to show they were not connected to the decision to run the Register’s story, but were not allowed to.
