Not Just Corn and Soybeans--Iowa's Unexpected Crops

Peach orchards, like this one in Virginia, may seem foreign to Iowa. But peaches are one of the many new, unexpected crops farmers are trying to grow in Iowa.

Iowa and Georgia have one thing in common: they're known for their signature crop. But one man is blurring those lines.

Tim Shriver, the owner of West Branch Orchards began growing peaches a few years back.

"A peach picked just off the tree is so much better than anything you can buy in a grocery store around here, it's continued to seem like an experiment worth trying."

On this Unexpected Iowa Week edition of Talk of Iowa, host Charity Nebbe talks with Shriver about what makes Iowa peaches special. She also chats with Tom Wahl about the odd crops he grows on Red Fern Farm, and Mike Krebill about fall mushroom hunting.
