Two governors who have hinted at making a run for president next year spent Monday in Iowa, which kicks off the presidential nominating process. Republican Larry Hogan of Maryland and Democrat Steve Bullock of Montana were attending a conference of the National Governor’s Association in Des Moines.
Hogan has been critical of President Donald Trump and has not ruled out running against him in 2020.
“I don’t know that I do want to be president,” Hogan told reporters. “But I do think governors are much more prepared to be president.”
Hogan wasn’t holding any campaign events while visiting Iowa, although he did meet with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.
“I don’t want to point any fingers at any one particular person or one party – It’s pretty frustrating,” Hogan said. “Most people are kind of fed up with all of it.”
Hogan spoke before a small crowd with Steve Bullock, who is the chairman of the National Governor’s Association, and is also mulling a run for the presidential nomination. Bullock appeared with Hogan before reporters, and echoed Hogan’s thoughts.
“This can’t just be about speeches or tweets. We actually have to get things done,” Bullock said. “We’re accountable to the people we serve. So we have to figure out ways to make government work.”
Bullock also told reporters he’s not ready to say whether or not he’s running for president.
