Iowa City High Grad Wins Kennedy Human Rights Award

Nina Lavezzo-Stecopoulos graduated from Iowa City High School in spring 2020. She plans to attend Barnard College in New York City.

Iowa City student journalist Nina Lavezzo-Stecopoulos took a class on social justice. That inspired her to investigate the racial breakdown of detention and suspension rates at her high school. Her investigation uncovered a significant disaparity and earned her national recognition. 

On this episode of Talk of Iowa,  Charity Nebbe speaks with Lavezzo-Stecopoulos about her start in journalism and how her reporting won a Robert F. Kennedy human rights award.
