Prepare to move to the beat of a different drummer on the September Iowa Arts Showcase as Iowa Public Radio Producer John Pemble sits down with Matt Andreini to discuss the Iowa/Hungary Percussion Project. Andreini, a University of Northern Iowa percussion instructor, has partnered with Hungarian percussionist GaborPalotas to commission works from three Iowan and three Hungarian composers for percussion duo. Andreini and Palotas performed these pieces in Hungary over the summer, and have already begun a series of Iowa performances at UNI.
Augustana’s Adjunct Assistant Professor of Viola, Debroah Dakin, and Associate Professor of Piano, Robert Elfline, share their inner thoughts about a performance of a powerful work by Laura Kaminsky called And Trouble Came: An African AIDS Diary. Joining with Augustana’s Professor of Music and Cello Janina Ehrlich, they form the Tikkun Trio. The Trio for Kaminsky’s work will be joined by Augustana’s professor of English Paul Olsen, serving as narrator. Together they will perform Kaminsky’s gripping work on September 24 at 8 p.m. at Augustana College and September 25 at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Davenport. Both concerts feature a pre-concert discussion and a post-concert reception with the composer.
Orchestra Iowa’s Tim Hankewich will delve into their 2013-14 season. Now in his eighth year as music director and conductor of the symphony, Hankewich shares the highlights and a few of his favorite pieces from the upcoming year. The Orchestra Iowa calendar is filled to the brim with five “Signature Symphonic” concerts, three chamber concerts, performances with both Ballet Iowa and the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and several special events concerts.
And Chuck Swanson, executive director of the University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium, lays out Hancher’s amazing 2013-2014 concert and youth series. With an array of acts from jazz all-stars like Wynton Marsalis and Wycliffe Gordon, to classical masters like the Jerusalem and Jupiter Quartets, to folk artists like the Masters of the Fiddle and the Sones de México, to comedians like Lily Tomlin, Hancher has a perfect show in store for every audience member.
