Iowa Arts Showcase: Interview with DMSO's Joseph Giunta

This Iowa Arts Showcase broadcast features an interview with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director and Conductor, Joseph Giunta. The symphony will be performing a Beyond the Score® concert featuring Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

The great English composer Edward Elgar wrote his much-loved Enigma Variations to depict “friends pictured within,” but the titular enigma is an unplayed “theme” that Elgar often hinted at but never revealed. This Beyond the Score® performance delves into the special personalities of those closest to Elgar in an acclaimed multi-media presentation created by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and brought to life by actors and live theatre. After intermission, the Des Moines Symphony performs the complete Enigma Variations, including the sublime “Nimrod” variation.

You can see the DMSO’s “Beyond the Score: Elgar’s Enigma Variations” concert on Saturday, April 28th at 7:30 p.m. or on Sunday, April 29th at 2:30 p.m. at the Des Moines Civic Center. Listen below to our interview with DMSO Music Director and Conductor, Joseph Giunta!
