It’s road trip time with the August edition of the Iowa Arts Showcase. Our first stop will be the Salisbury Concours d’Elegance: A Celebration of the Art and Design of the Automobile, hosted by the Salisbury House in Des Moines. Katie Wengert, director of marketing, and David Baum, co-chair of the Concours committee, will fill us in on this celebration of classic motor vehicles. The display this year includes Jaguars, Lincolns, station wagons, antiques, Model T’s, collectibles, and vintage motorcycles. The Concours will grace the magnificent gardens and grounds surrounding Salisbury House on September 8th.
Whether you enjoy musicals, jazz, comedy, or symphony orchestras, Iowa State University’s Stephens Auditorium has something for you in their upcoming programs. Mark North, general manager, gives us the inside scoop on their 2013-14 season, including five Broadway musicals, five premier musical ensembles, and an entourage of famous performers including the Masters of the Fiddle, the Moscow Ballet, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and world-famous comedic icon Bill Cosby. Sara Compton, Outreach Coordinator, also shares about CY Stephen’s youth series which showcases nine amazing performances, treating kids of all ages to great music as well as stories both old and new.
Imagine hearing the sounds of birds chirping, frogs croaking, and the wind in the grass all blending to form a natural orchestra. Brooke Joyce, composer in residence at Luther College, gathered these audio soundbites to compose a unique symphony called “Talking Trees.” Joyce fills us in on his inspirations and his process. His venture will be installed on the Luther College campus on August 26th.
On our last stop, Jason Weinberger, musical director of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, discusses the orchestra’s 2013-14 season, including Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Ravel’s Bolero, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. Weinberger, who steps off the podium to solo on Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint, will also fill us in on a several guest artists and other concerts this season you won’t want to miss.
