On August 6, 2019, the Iowa City Council declared a climate crisis. This declaration amends Iowa City's previous Climate Action Plan that was published in late 2018. The new goals in the revised plan include reducing Iowa City's carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and to be at net zero carbon emissions by 2050. These ambitious goals are not without challenges as the City of Iowa City has no control over the carbon emissions generated by MidAmerican Energy and the University of Iowa, both of which make up 57% of Iowa City's carbon emissions.
