American vocalist and musician Alison Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie Hince had both been in other bands when they met in London in 2000.  They began exchanging ideas for songs by sending each other tapes.  In time, they started writing and recording their songs using a drum machine to fill out the sound, and that's how The Kills were born.  According to the duo, they came up with the name because it "sounded like a band that could exist in any decade."  Mosshart and Hince are known for being a bit edgy, rarely granting interviews and giving the impression that they are anti-music industry.  Ash & Ice is the fifth album from The Kills, and their first in five years.
