"People that are traveling equal or greater than 100 mph on our roads, that's a pretty alarming stat, that is up 74%" from the last four year average, said Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol.

We’ve been enjoying super low gas prices due to a number of reasons. People have been driving less, and there’s a worldwide oil glut. Here in Iowa we’re paying on average $1.75 per gallon. The national average is about ten cents higher $1.86 per gallon.

So gas prices have plummeted, no secret there, but did you know the number of speeding tickets in the state has jumped? On this segment of River to River, Ben Kieffer speaks to Sergeant Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol to explain the jump in speeding tickets.

Later on, Kieffer is joined by Dan McGehee of the University of Iowa National Advanced Driving Simulator. McGehee and his colleagues at NADS recently recieved a $7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to research automated driving in rural America.

Guests:

Alex Dinkla, public information officer, Iowa State Patrol

Dan McGehee, director, National Advanced Driving Simulator
