Drug Drop-Off

CFPD
This former post office mailbox now collects unwanted and expired prescription drugs in the lobby of the Cedar Falls Police Department

The Cedar Falls Police Department is now taking back unused, unwanted and expired prescription drugs at a collection box in the lobby at the City Hall. Police Captain Craig Berte says the bright white re-purposed post office mailbox is available 24-7. He says “it’s totally anonymous, the only reason we’re checking it is we’re dumping it when it gets full.”

Berte says in the past, residents had to wait for a special collection event. He says the effort is intended to keep prescription drugs off the streets and out of the trash and ground water. He says they’ll accept pills, sprays or creams, but not needles.

The Governor’s Office of Drug Control policy says some forty other law enforcement agencies around the state offer similar drop-off options. An additional 10 Iowa pharmacies also participate.
