DNR Offers Free Fishing This Weekend

Iowa DNR

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is sponsoring free fishing this weekend. State residents can try fishing without buying a license Friday through Sunday.

DNR Chief of Fisheries, Joe Larscheid, said there are a number of activities planned designed to help make memories.

“There’s gonna be a lot of fishing events. You go to our website you can see what events are close by. Different conservation groups are all doing different events across the state if you need help fishing,” said Larscheid. “If you don’t know how to fish but just haven’t fished in a while, it’s a great weekend to pick it up again."

The DNR reports it’s a perfect time to go fishing because several species such as blue gill and sun fish are close to shore and easy to catch. Information about where to fish is on the agency's website.

Larscheid said he believes fishing is a great equalizer because “no special equipment is needed just a pole and some bait."

The cost of an Iowa fishing license for those 16 and older is $25.00.
