Wikimedia, Robpinion

Nine instances of anti-semitism were reported in Iowa in 2017, up from zero reports the year before, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s annual audit.

During this hour of River to River, host Ben Kieffer reflects on the murder of 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last weekend and checks in with Iowa’s Jewish community.

Kieffer is joined by Rabbi David Kaufman, of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Des Moines, who calls for citizens to speak out against hate speech in their daily lives. Robert Cargill, Associate Professor of Judaism and Christianity at the University of Iowa.

During this hour, we also take a look at the chipping away of the Affordable Care Act with Pete Damiano, who is director of the Public Policy Center at the University of Iowa, and a young professional heading back to school in the hopes of better healthcare.
