Many Democratic presidential candidates have offered their reaction to Thursday’s release with redactions of the Mueller report investigating Russian involvement in the 2016 election.
Campaigning in Des Moines, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota said she feels the special counsel should testify before Congress.
“The most important thing is that Bob Mueller come before Congress so that we can get to the bottom of why there’s this difference between his interpretation of the law and the Attorney General of the United States,” Klobuchar said.
Klobuchar also said she hopes the report will illuminate all of the “very illegal things the Russians did” to try to influence the election, such as hacking election equipment and campaign accounts, as well as spreading propaganda aimed to divide people.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York was also in Iowa, and referred to Attorney General William Barr’s press conference Thursday morning as a “complete farce” and an “embarrassing display of propaganda on behalf of President Trump.”
“Congress must get the full, unredacted Mueller report, and the American people deserve to know its full findings because nobody, especially not the president of the United States, is immune from accountability," Gillibrand said.
Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey released a searchable version of the Mueller report on Twitter for an easier way to read the report.
Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper published a tweet saying, “AG Barr should work to protect the interests of the people, not the President. It's clear from this morning's press conference where his allegiances lie. The American people deserve answers.”
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign released a statement Thursday afternoon that said in part, “While we have more detail from today's report than before, Congress must continue its investigation into Trump's conduct and any foreign attempts to influence our election.”
A statement from author and activist Marianne Williamson’s campaign was critical of Attorney General Barr.
“To use the role of Attorney General for the purposes of political messaging is a profound degradation of the purpose of the office; William Barr has shown himself to be just another political lackey who serves to do the President’s bidding above all else,” the statement said.
