CD of the Week from Conor Oberst

npr.org

Upside Down Mountain is the latest album from Omaha native Conor Oberst.  In addition to records released under his own name, he has been a member of several other bands, most notably Bright Eyes.  Oberst has a very distinctive voice; both the sound of it and his literary voice.  Commenting on the new album, he said: "For me, language is a huge part of why I make music.  I'm not the greatest guitar player or piano player- I'm not the greatest singer, either- but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I'm proud of, then that's what I bring to the table."  Conor Oberst will be headlining the first night of this year's 80/35 Festival in downtown Des Moines.
