The sixth annual Hinterland Music Festival, originally scheduled for July 31–August 2, 2020, has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. The festival has been rescheduled to August 6–8, 2021, at its usual location at the Avenue of the Saints Amphitheater in St. Charles.
“Almost all of this year’s lineup is still in for 2021 — including headliners Leon Bridges, Of Monsters and Men, and Tyler Childers,” a May 28 press release from the Hinterland team said. “Plus, we are making Friday a full day, which will include some exciting additions.”
Tickets purchased for this year’s festival will remain valid for the 2021 date. Patrons can request a refund for their tickets via email until July 17, 2020. Refund requests can be made here.
Hinterland has collaborated with Status Serigraph, a Knoxville, Tennessee-based graphic design studio whose big-name music clientele has included Phish and the Grateful Dead, to create a limited-edition screen-printed poster honoring the postponed 2020 date.
“We didn’t want to let the festival season go by without creating something to commemorate it,” the Hinterland team said. The poster, along with a “World 2020” shirt design and previous years’ merch, can be purchased here.
“Under these conditions, we can’t produce the festival to our standards or to your expectations,” the May 28 press release said. “Please remember to support each other as we all work to make it through this time. For now, we will daydream about what it’s going to be like next summer when we stand with all the other music fans fully appreciating the moment like we never have before.”
Upon Hinterland's cancellation, it's now clear that it may be a summer without music festivals in Iowa. 515 Alive, held annually in Des Moines at Water Works Park, will not happen as originally planned and has been postponed until 2021. A fledgling festival in Granger in its second year called Clusterfunk is also cancelling plans for a 2020 event, and 80/35 festival organizers cancelled this year’s event in April.
