Trump Belatedly Reckons With Worsening Pandemic, Urges Mask Wearing

President Trump is acknowledging the reality that the coronavirus pandemic in this country is getting worse as U.S. deaths from COVID-19 surpass 142,000.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump backed off the rosy predictions he has made in the past, such as when he said the virus would disappear "like a miracle.” Instead, the president said the pandemic “will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better.”

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to unveil a proposal this week for another round of coronavirus relief — but before haggling with Democrats, Congressional Republicans are hitting a roadblock with the White House.
