Dr. Dog: Tiny Desk Concert

Dr. Dog isn't an obvious choice for one of NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concerts. For one thing, it's a pretty big group, at least for the small space behind Bob Boilen's desk. The band's music can be pretty chaotic — loud and rumbling, with multiple instruments fighting to be heard. And singer Toby Leaman likes to belt out his vocals in a window-rattling, raspy growl.

But that didn't stop us from trying to set something up. When we called the Philadelphia-based band to see if it was interested in playing a set, management assured us that Dr. Dog could keep it cozy and quiet.

But when the group pulled up to NPR in its van, Scott McMicken, Toby Leaman, Zach Miller, Juston Stens and Frank McElroy tumbled out, each with a separate instrument he had every intention of playing.

The five of them huddled up in our little corner and made a fantastic, rambling sound. It was so infectious, no one in the office seemed to mind that they couldn't get any work done.
