'American Pastoral' by Philip Roth

"I know I shouldn't even have to mention this book, seeing that it is almost 10 years old, and it won a Pulitzer. Yet, still I have run into a select few people who have even heard of this particular novel or the author.

"I read about a book a week, and in the last few months, this makes all others I've come across subpar. It's about a Jewish boy growing up in a picture-perfect family during the 1940s. Then it moves on to his daughter's life, wherein something terrible happens and rips his whole life apart. It touches on dealing with loss and covering up emotions. It is also highly political in nature. This book is perfect."
