Copland's 'Short' Symphony

In his 1980 interview with NPR's Fred Calland, Aaron Copland discusses his Second Symphony, known as the "Short Symphony" -- one of the composer’s favorite works.

Copland wrote his Second Symphony in the early 1930s and his friend and fellow composer Carlos Chávez premiered the work in Mexico City in 1934.

Following this interview segment, Copland disciple Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Second Symphony.
