Baltimore native, Peabody conservatory graduate, member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra, a marine in World War II--not many people know the details of the life of American composer Alan Shulman, and few know his music. His best-known piece might be the one we'll hear. It's a tuneful showcase for the viola -- The Theme and Variations for Viola and Piano. We'll hear a performance from the 2000 Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival by Cynthia Phelps, viola, and Rick Rowley, piano.
