When it comes to talking about race, it may be difficult to be honest about our experiences. But Bernestine Singley managed to persuade 30 writers -- black and white -- to reveal their personal stories about race relations and race consciousness. Singley, a lawyer, mediator and consultant, compiled the essays in her new book, When Race Becomes Real: Black and White Writers Confront Their Personal Histories.
Over the next few weeks, six contributors to Singley's book join The Tavis Smiley Show to share their essays. Contributors include Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts, professor and radio producer Kim Springer, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Les Payne, writer and activist Tim Wise, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Natalie Angier and writer Susan Straight.
