Afghanistan's ruling Taliban recently destroyed ancient Buddhist statues and artifacts in Afghanistan. The destruction has caused international outrage. But Afghan leaders say it surprises them that outsiders seem more concerned about statues than Afghanistan's living people, who have been suffering from famine and starvation through a twenty year war.
