The Clinton administration is introducing new workplace protections for employees who perform repetitive motions such as typing, scanning groceries or lifting heavy boxes. As NPR's Kathleen Schalch reports, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules take effect in January, but businesses want the standards tossed out and some are filing legal action to block them. The rules were so controversial that they helped to scuttle budget negotiations between the Clinton administration and the Republican Congress. And there's no assurance that a Bush administration would ever impose them.
